Who is considered disabled?

The Social Security Administration defines disability based on a person's inability to work. There are three main parts to their definition:

Can you perform the essential tasks of the job you used to do?

• Some illnesses and injuries make it impossible to do your job. If you can longer perform the required activities involved in your current position, you may qualify for disability.

Could you adjust to a different kind of work?

• If you cannot perform your current or previous job, but your illness or injury does not prevent you from doing other work, you probably don't qualify for disability according to the SSA. You must not be able to do any kind of work.

Is your disability expected to last for at least 12 months?

• If your illness or injury is expected to keep you from working for at least a year, you qualify as disabled. If your illness or injury is expected to be fatal, disability insurance can help you ensure that your loved ones will be financially stable.
